In course of realisation of anti-flood protection measures on Prague riverbanks it was necessary to allow for the possibility of closing the mouth of the Čertovka in case of floods. A steel sliding gate was designed for this purpose and fitted into a closed frame structure made of reinforced concrete, 23,45 m long and 4,80 m high. The gate is located in place of the original riverfront wall between the Charles Bridge and Čertovka. At flood risk moments the gate slides out and blocks the Čertovka mouth. From the constructional point of view the gate structure was carried out with the use of reinforced-concrete diaphragm walls tied into the bedrock, fulfilling optimally the following key requirements: foundation of the frame structure and trackage on a bearing base, sheeting of the foundation pit during the construction, waterproof separation of the riverbed subsoil of the Čertovka and Vltava River. The diaphragm walls are realised in the way that they become a permanent part of the reinforced-concrete structure of the closure imposition. Final sealing of the diaphragm walls was carried out in some parts by jet-grouting.The sheet piles Larssen IIIn were used both as temporary structural elements for sheeting of the foundation pit with the dimensions of 50x15 m extending to the Vltava river flow, and as permanent structural elements – underground barriers – continuing to the pillar no. 11 of the Charles Bridge. A drift barrier was built along the frame structure; it was necessary to found it on micropiles due to the presence of soft subsoil layers.
